Acorn Class

Our main theme in Acorn class is 'All About Me'. We will be naming key body parts and naming less familiar ones, such as ankles, wrists, knuckles. We will be looking at how humans grow and change throughout their lives and learn the names of each stage of a humans growth. We will explore different types of families around the world. We will take a closer look at where we live and explore where other families live around the world. We will look closer at the location of our school and what is around it and in the village. We will learn about people who help us in our community, along with who can help us in an emergency. We will also look at how our community changes throughout the year during the different seasons.
In Literacy, we will be reading our core text 'The Gruffalo' We will be exploring the characters, creating pictures of them and looking at their features, particularly at the words and phrases used to describe the Gruffalo throughout the story. We will be looking at the different locations the story takes place. We will be using illustrations to help us retell the story. We will be discussing what the characters did during the story and thinking about how they might have felt. We will reading other Gruffalo stories- 'The Gruffalo' s child' and 'Gruffalo Granny', along with other books written by Julia Donaldson.
Our two core rhymes this half term are 'The Gruffalo' Rhyme' and 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.' Copies of these rhymes will be sent home for children to share with you. We will be singing these songs during circle times.
In Phonics we will be working on sound discrimination- encouraging the children to tune into environmental, percussion and body sounds through a variety of activities. We will also be working on word awareness- encouraging the children to tune into words that make up speech flow. During activities children will have a chance to engage in conversations, take turns and develop their vocabulary.
In Maths we will be focusing on counting, particularly listening out for and saying number names. We will explore and identify repeats in rhymes and stories, explore shape by building with different shapes and objects. We will also be making comparisons of more than, fewer than and the same.
In Art we will be exploring colour- bright and dull colours, using oil pastels and working on holding a paintbrush correctly. We will be using straight and curved lines, creating buildings and looking at the colours on Elmer the Elephant. We will be looking at the artwork 'Coming out of school' by Lowry and Hundertwasser houses in Vienna and the Kuchbauer Tower.
In Design Technology we will be exploring cooking- creating sweet and savoury snacks on toast and savoury vegetable pasta.
To help the children develop their Personal and Social Development we will be discussing emotions and feelings, what can make us feel that way and what we can do when we are feeling that way. We will be using 'The Colour Monster' story to support children's understanding. We will support children with transitions throughout the day and to develop friendships with others.
To help the children with their Physical Development we will provide push-along wheeled toys, scooters and tricycles, along with balance beams and stepping stones. The children will be supported to develop their kicking, throwing and catching skills with different resources such as, balls, hoops and bean bags during our weekly PE sessions. The children will be encouraged to develop their large motor skills by waving streamers, using paint and chalk to make large creations. The children will also be encouraged to develop their fine motor skills by using scissors, putting coats on independently and managing buttons and zips.
