We will start our Literacy focus this term by looking at the story of 'The Gruffalo'. We will be creating paintings of the Gruffalo and creating character descriptions by identifying and describing the different parts of his body. We will also learn to sequence the story by creating our own story maps and then innovating the story by changing some of the characters to create our own version of this well-known story.The children will use character props and story maps to develop their retelling skills further. They will be developing their communication and language skills by practising how to construct sentences verbally by using stem sentences during class discussions modelled by the adults.
Our Maths focus this term is ‘Match and Sort’. We will start by matching objects to the same object or picture and justifying our thinking by using mathematical reasoning. We will be using stem sentences to support our thinking such as “They are the same because…”. The children will then move on to identifying matching sets of objects and when a set is not the same and why. We will then be developing our problem-solving skills by explaining how we can change the set to make sure it matches.
In our Primary Knowledge Curriculum theme ‘All About Me’, the children will start by learning about themselves through first of all identifying and naming body parts. We will be discussing what each body part is used for and whether it is soft or hard. They will then move on to talk about how they have changed as they have grown since being born by looking at baby photos and then identifying the changes we notice. We will then move onto to talk about where we live and discuss how we live in different homes such as houses or bungalows or flats. We will then be discussing people who help us in our community such as police officers, doctors, nurses and fire fighters.
In RE the children will explore the big question ‘How do people celebrate their special times?' We will be discussing what makes us special because we are all different. We will start by looking at our faces and discussing how we look different before moving on to discuss what we enjoy and our favourite stories. The children will learn about how things can be different for each person and that is what makes us special. By the end of the half term, we will be exploring two different characters, one who is a Christian and one who is a Muslim.
In Art this term, the children will be learning how to use paint brushes and different types of paint including block paints, water colours and liquid paint. We will be exploring different artists' work and using this to create our own. We will also be learning how to represent vertical and horizontal lines to create different pieces of artwork such as Elmer drawings and sketches of our own homes.
